Elephant Robot

Robotics Class

By the 8th Hour Life Skills Class

At the end of March and throughout the month of April, the Life skills class consisting of Elaine, Trotter, Kolten, Nathan, Rex, and Tavin, along with the help of Mrs. Smith, worked on a robotics unit. The robotics class was started in the spring semester of 2020, after a grant was given from the 4H Las Animas County Extension Agency to purchase the LEGO Mindstorm EV3 building sets. That semester was cut short due to the state closing schools while the pandemic raged on throughout the world. This year’s class created an elephant in Kim High School in the science classroom during the eighth hour class.

The robot took about three weeks to complete. It took approximately two weeks to build and one week to program the elephant robot to do various things. The elephant can walk, pick up an object with its trunk, and ROAR!! It has been fun, but the elephant will be taken apart and made into a stair climber, which hopefully will climb stairs, in the next phase of the robotics unit.
